Ticks are nasty little buggers!

Not only are they off-putting to look at, but they can also carry dangerous diseases such as Lyme disease, which causes serious problems to both humans and pets.

As the temperature rises and grass begins to grow, the tick population can rise at an alarming pace. Ticks aren't easy to spot in the grass. In fact, most people only notice them after they've attached themselves to the skin of an innocent victim.

However, there is some good news.

There are several things that you can do to eliminate ticks from your lawn or at least reduce their numbers. Here are some of the best practices!

1. Mow the Lawn

Ticks love to live in tall grass and brush. This is because the height of the grass makes it easier for this insect to hop on to its next victim.

To reduce their habitat, make sure to mow your lawn regularly - especially the edges.

Clean up any other garbage or fallen leaves that could provide a cozy home for these pests.

2. Tickle Their Feet

It sounds silly, but it's true! Ticks don't like materials that irritate their feet. These include:

  • Paths lined with wood chips or gravel
  • Wooded areas
  • Dry ground
  • Asphalt

When you decorate your lawn, consider adding these materials to your design to prevent ticks from crossing the path to your home.

This is especially useful if you create paths on your lawn that are bordered with wood chips or paved with asphalt.

3. Keep Your Woodpiles Stacked

Sloppy woodpiles create many shade areas where ticks love to hide. Similarly, if you keep your woodpiles in a dark space, you will allow moisture to develop, which is another tick favorite.

To stop this from becoming a problem, make sure that your woodpiles are neatly stacked in a sunny place where the wood will always remain dry.

4. Repel Them with A Plant

Luckily, there are several beautiful plants that you can add to your lawn that will repel ticks. Not only are they beautiful and smell great - at least to us - but they will also do a great job of keeping these pests away.

Some of these plants include:

  • Lavender
  • Pennyroyal
  • Sage
  • Eucalyptus
  • Mint

5. Employ A Tick-Eater

This may not be a common choice for repelling ticks, however, there are plenty of animal friends available to help you get rid of this pest!

Chickens, ducks, and robins are known to feast on ticks. Although chickens and ducks are the best choice, it is not possible for everyone to rely on their help.

If this is the case for you, attract robins to your lawn by placing bird feeders and bird baths in easy to reach places.
